Artist Statement
Isaac Boulay (b.1995) is a London-based contemporary artist whose drawings and paintings reflect a deep exploration of human consciousness and esoteric symbolism. His artistic practice delves into spirituality, the satirical undertones of society, and the very essence of reality itself.
Employing pencil, paper, felt tips, and markers, Boulay’s artistry harkens back to a sense of childhood nostalgia that he finds crucial in establishing a genuine connection to his creations. His intention is to imbue his work with a universal appeal, aiming to demystify and destigmatize certain symbolic representations. Through a blending of elements from cartoons, video games, campy aesthetics, as well as influences from Japanese culture and the concept of animism. Boulay’s artistry explores the intersection between media, escapism, and profound spiritual truths concealed within the mundane.
Boulay’s art beckons viewers to embrace a childlike wonder, providing a respite from the complexities and stressors of modern life. His creations cultivate an environment of solace and camaraderie, fostering a sense of inclusion and understanding. Artist Biography
Born in East London, England. 1995. Isaac Boulay is a contemporary artist whose creative journey has been shaped by a diverse range of experiences from his upbringing. Having grown up attending Catholic Church regularly, playing video games, and being immersed in cartoons alongside an imaginary sister, Isaac developed a unique perspective on life from a young age. Spending significant time with his grandmother, he gained wisdom that deeply influenced his artistic expression.
From early childhood, Isaac found joy in drawing various subjects, including family members, movie characters, and constructing imaginary worlds with crossover elements. Exposure to a multicultural primary school environment provided him with valuable insights from different perspectives and cultures. This sparked curiosity and sense of depth in Isaac’s artistic exploration.
Seeking individuality and distinction, Isaac navigated the challenges of growing up in East London by adapting and learning to ‘code switch’ to fit in while maintaining his uniqueness. Rediscovering his passion for art during his GCSE years, he faced creative constraints within the school system and struggled with balancing a growing ego that hindered his artistic pursuits.
Although initially drawn to the sciences, a burnout during his A levels prompted Isaac to reassess his career path. Transitioning to university provided him with a liberating and transformative experience where he explored diverse facets of his identity. Despite grappling with an unhealthy ego and fear-driven decisions, Isaac underwent a profound spiritual awakening that shifted his perspective on life and creativity.
Embracing this shift, Isaac found renewal in shedding old patterns that no longer served him, leading to a resurgence of creativity and a childlike curiosity in his approach to artistry. Spirituality became a central driving force in his life and artistic process, guiding him towards a more authentic and fulfilling creative path.
